Over about 68 years of in-universe time, in other words, multiple Galaxy-wide wars are fought, massive political changes occur, and whole planets are wrecked. The last film at this time of writing, Rise of Skywalker, takes place 35 years afterward. (The deuterocanonical and non-canonical Star Wars sprawls far beyond that, in expanded universes of books, comics, and videogames.) The first chronological film, The Phantom Menace, takes place some 32 years before the events of A New Hope.
